We are overwhelmed ” is the only phrase that explains our reaction to the the response to the JPMS International Medical Writing Contest 2012.

The response to the contest has been tremendous and submissions have literally been hounding our mailbox in scores . We have already touched the century mark, crossed continents and highlighted some really interesting stuff.

With a the number of submissions increasing in leaps and bounds we are extremely pleased to announce that we are extending the deadline for submission of entries by six weeks that is to 20th September 2012.

So if you are thinking that you missed the chance of a lifetime just put on your thinking cap and dash to the nearest keyboard and send in your articles fast. Remember the new extended deadline on public demand is now 20th September 2012 and this will not be extended further . We will keep on publishing articles upto a fortnight after the last date. The article metrics will be collected 30 days after publication of the last article.

Results will be declared within 45 days of publication of the last article .

THE 2012 JPMS INTERNATIONAL WRITING CONTEST

The writing contest is organized by JPMS Medical Blogs and funded by the Journal of Pakistan Medical Students (JPMS) in partnership with Public Health Perspective (PHP) Online Newsletter, Nepal. Contest opens on June 20th 2012 and the deadline for submission is September 20th 2012.

  • Learning from Medical Errors: common errors which could save many lives
  • Becoming Better Doctors
  • Life of a doctor: Burnout and medical life; social and family problems faced by doctors due to hectic life style
  • Medics and Print/Electronic Media
  • Social Media and Doctors.
  • Medical Education
  • Evidence Based Medicine: Discussing recent researches challenging current medical practice.

GENERAL RULES

All posts will be scored on the basis of two parameters.

A. 60% of scores will be awarded by the judges. The judges will be from prestigious international institutes and are not necessarily from the editorial team of JPMS. If the number of submissions is greater than 30, a list of top 10 will be selected by the junior editors and sent to the judges.

B. 40% of scores awarded in the basis of the number of website hits and likes.
  • No submission or registration fee. It’s a free contest.
  • The final date to receive your contribution(s) is September 20, 2012. Late entries will not be considered.
  • All submissions must contain original material, and must not have been previously published, accepted for publication, or have been a winner in another contest prior to the September 20th deadline.
  • All plagiarized contributors will be rejected automatically. After screening by the Co-Chairs the eligible posts will be put up on the website (all the articles will appear on the site within a window of 10 days).
  • Eligibility of the post as decided by the Jury Board will be final and binding and cannot be challenged under any laws.
  • Each person can send in multiple entries, however only one will be posted online in 7 days. Contest entries cannot be revised or altered once submitted.
  • There is no word limit, however it will be preferred if the word count is between 400-1200.
  • We request contributors to refrain from political statements and critique on government policies unless they can be substantiated by facts from peer reviewed journals.
  • Similarly, discussing religious aspects and personal beliefs is strongly discouraged.
  • The JPMS Medical Blogs Admin has a similar policy of handling comments which will be posted in response to the entries.
  • Contributions should not have any implication in terms of religion, politics etc.

PRIZES

The winner and the runner up will get the cash/other prizes. Additional prizes/categories of prizes may be declared on the basis of availability of funds/sponsors in the future.

ELIGIBILITY

Medial and non medical professionals and students are welcomed to participate. The articles will be accepted on merit of the article.

RESULTS

On the day of the results, the Jury will collect data on the metric from the website and score award the entries accordingly. Date will be announced later.

  • Originality and innovation
  • Quality of content
  • Focus & clarity
  • Organized, fluid writing style
  • Authenticity, strength & distinctness of voice

In case of a tie the decision of the Chief Editor, JPMS Medical Blogs will be final.

Winners will be declared as a press release, which will be posted on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, RSS Feed and LinkedIn profile in addition to the JPMS Official website along with the JPMS Medical Blogs website. The social media direct reach of JPMS is approximately 5000 and in direct reach is more than 0.5 Million (Social Media). The websites have approximately 8000 page views per month. The winners will also be notified via an email.
