Across the country, queer Asian and Pacific Islander [youth] face the unique challenge of navigating multiple, complex identities. However, because there are no readily available platforms, their stories are not known, recognized, or acknowledged. We want to counteract this lack of representation by creating a medium through which people can safely share their experiences.
The most efficient way to achieve this is to collect stories from individuals who hail from diverse regions across the nation. The profiles/blogs created from these stories can then be used to share the various facets of intersecting identities and experiences with our allies and members through our website. These intersections may include, but are not limited to, any combination of API, gender, sexual identities, class, religion, and immigration status. For example, the intersections of being Asian Pacific Islander American, religious, and transgender; or being Asian Pacific Islander American, undocumented, and queer; the list goes on.
Though the majority of work that API Equality-LA does is Los Angeles based, it’s important that we recognize and put a face to these issues. This is why we chose our website as our main platform; although in-person panels are effective, the Internet would be the best way to make these stories easily accessible to not only inform, but also move and inspire people across the nation and around the world.
So API Equality-LA is inviting you to share your unique experiences and stories with us. You can tell your story in any way you feel best, whether through poetry, a short story, artwork, video, music or whatever you choose. We want you to have creative freedom.
If you are interested in contributing or if you have any other questions please e-mail us at hertz.intern@apiequalityla.org or shelly.intern@apiequalityla.org for guidelines and more details.
