World Shakespeare Festival Writing Competition (Writing the City, Singapore)

World Shakespeare Festival Writing Competition (Writing the City, Singapore)
Deadline: 30 June 2012

Witches. Love poetry. Dark comedy. A hero with a tragic fate! And perhaps, even a challenge to thee to rhyme.

This month, the British Council celebrates the World Shakespeare Festival! In line with that theme, Writing the City invites writers to submit a piece on the city, inspired by any one or more of the bards’ poetry and plays.

Write a modern version of Hamlet’s revenge set against the backdrop of the city, or Ophelia’s watery journey alongside the Singapore River. Explore a fantasy piece with Puck and the fairies, or a story of politics, power and tense family ties.

Among other things, Shakespeare was known for his lyricism, his wit and his wordplay. Take a leaf from the book of the bard of Avon and “give thy thoughts [a] tongue.”

Write in any genre of your choosing as long as it is based on this theme. Our judges will be looking out for pieces that take inspiration from Shakespeare’s works, and add a little something of their own.

Winners will receive the following prizes:
  • First Prize: $120 Kinokuniya Book Voucher
  • 2 runners up will receive London 2012 Olympic notebooks

Please make sure that you pay close attention to following all the rules and instructions below when entering the Competition:
