Deadline: 1 May 2012
Unswept is an online literary journal based in Singapore and published twice a year. It owes its name and mission to the genre of mosaic called the asarotos oikos, or unswept floor. Its overriding interest is in the already-given—not just the canon, but what was published last month, or yesterday, or which has been consigned to the ash heap of literary history—and what writers do with it.
The journal seeks to present texts that talk to, about, or behind the backs of other texts; praising or unpraising texts; texts that transform, renovate, reiterate, or pointedly ignore. “Where do our desires come from?” is one question it likes. “What is this bullshit?” is another.
Issue One was published at the end of 2011. Submissions for Issue Two are now open.
WHAT?
Poems, stories, essays, reviews or any other creative texts. Visual poetry, hypertexts, hybrid works etc. are welcome. Read the About page before submitting.
HOW?
Submit through Submishmash if possible, following the guidelines stated there. Otherwise, email a query to the editor. Do not send your submission by email without querying first.
HOW MUCH?
A reasonable quantity of work. There’s no such thing as too little. There is such a thing as too much, but boldness will not be punished. The cautious may restrict themselves to six pages of text.
WHEN?
The current reading period will end on 1 May 2012. Any work received after this date will be considered when the next reading period begins. Do not submit more than once per reading period unless asked to.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Each successful contributor will receive a symbolic payment of S$15, sent through PayPal.
Unpublished work is preferred. Previously published work that has not already reached a wide audience will be considered, but can receive no payment.
Simultaneous submissions are welcome. If you receive an earlier acceptance elsewhere, immediately inform the editor at the address above.
