Deadline: 25 June 2011
Poetry is perhaps the oldest literary genre and in its earliest use has been associated with prophecy, religious rituals and transcendent truths. Though poetry has served different functions and has appeared under different guises throughout human history, the idea of poetry remains relevant to modern life; with its ability to blend sound, sense, and sometimes nonsense, the notions of meaning, beauty, truth and wisdom combine and collide.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
This workshop introduces participants to the skills of close reading that include both basic and advance level practices and strategies in poetry reading. Basic rhetorical devices commonly found in poetic writings as well as more sophisticated types of analysis will be covered in this workshop.
Participants will learn how to read in a non-linear fashion and both appreciate and understand the complexities of the art of poetry. More importantly, the workshop is also aimed at refining aesthetic sensitivities to sound and structure. This workshop is meant for anyone with the interest in reading and analyzing poetry.
