WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE INAUGURAL CONFERENCE of the United Arab Emirates Gender and Women’s Studies Consortium (The Consortium). Scholars, practitioners and students interested in gender and women’s studies in the UAE and the Arab region are encouraged to submit proposals/abstracts for individual papers, workshops, panels or seminar-style discussion addressing the following conference themes.
Track I. Curriculum Matters: Gender and Women’s Studies in/and the Arab Region Classrooms
Please consider proposing a paper, workshop, panel or seminar addressing one or more of these questions:
* Why is it important to include gender perspectives in the classroom?
* How do gender and women’s studies courses strengthen Arab culture?
* Which pedagogies are most useful in gender and women’s studies courses?
* How will gender perspectives promote interdisciplinary teaching and research?
* Will studying gender and women improve community practices?
Track II. Research Matters: Gender and Women’s Studies Perspectives in/on the Arab Region
Please consider proposing a paper, workshop, panel or seminar focused on one or these topics:
* Gender, Women, History and Culture
* Gender, Women, Politics, Law and Social Studies
* Gender, Women, Art, Media, and Literature
* Gender, Women, Science, Medicine and Technology
* Gender, Women, Economy, Development and Business
Track III. Focus on Arab Feminisms
Please consider proposing a paper, workshop, panel or seminar focused on one or these topics:
* Arab Feminisms: History
* Arab Feminisms: Variations and Commonalities
* Arab Feminisms: Unique and Distinct
* Arab Feminisms: Prospects for the Future
Graduate and undergraduate students interested in gender and women’s studies are especially welcome to submit proposals.
The UAE Gender and Women’s Studies Consortium is committed to supporting UAE and Arab Region faculty interested in developing Gender and Women’s Studies courses. Keynote Speakers include Professor Suad Joseph and Professor Lynda Birke. This Conference is sponsored by The American University of Sharjah, Sharjah, UAE and The University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine, USA.
