Asian Arts Initiative is pleased to invite applications from performance-based artists to participate in our 2011 Artists Exchange exploring the theme of “Home, far and near.” Our Artists Exchange was started in 2002 with the original goal of supporting Asian American artists to explore or research topics and issues facing the Asian American community, and to create new work grounded and inspired by the learning exchange. As the Artists Exchange has evolved, we have also realized the importance of providing a collaborative space, especially for solo artists, and the opportunity for creative exchange.
Our 2011 Artists Exchange includes three major components:
1) A weekend festival featuring participants’ existing work (full pieces or excerpts). The work will be presented "festival-style" with limited tech and rehearsal time. Each participant will be presented as part of at least one shared program / night, though some artists may be invited to perform multiple nights. 2) A week-long series of group workshops to be proposed and led by each Artists Exchange participant in turn, as well as guest speakers and presentations. We anticipate the workshops to include a combination of skills sharing and skills development; generative exercises; and content related to the theme of “Home, far and near” such as immigration, or the issue of gentrification or displacement in the neighborhoods where many of us live or work. through Friday November 18)
3) A public presentation of what is learned and created from the week, to be featured at Asian Arts Initiative’s Family Style open mic event. (Friday November 18)
We are seeking up to 8 artists representing diverse performance disciplines—including but not limited to, dance, music, spoken word, and theater. Each artist who is selected to participate will receive a $1,000 honorarium. Travel stipends and accommodations will be provided for artists who live outside the Philadelphia area. Artistic collectives or ensembles are eligible to apply though stipends and performance time will be limited.
To be considered, artists must be able to commit to participating in the entire workshop and performance schedule of the Artists Exchange.
To apply for our 2011 Artists Exchange, please submit the following no later than Friday, July 8, 2011:
APPLICATION INFORMATION
1) Your name and contact information, including mailing address, phone number/s, and e-mail address.
2) A description of the work you are proposing to perform for the festival portion of the Artists Exchange; including its title, artistic discipline and/or genres, length of the piece or excerpt, any unusual technical requirements, and if there are any performers in addition to yourself. If you are proposing to create new work to perform, please outline your timeline and process for development, and describe any relevant projects or experience that will enable you to successfully complete the piece by the time of the Artists Exchange. Home do you feel that this work is related to the them of “Home, far and Near”?
3) A short description of the workshop/s you would wish to lead for the group of fellow artists participating in the Artists Exchange. What skills do you hope to build or share? What, if anything, do you expect to be created? How much time will your workshop require?
4) An artist statement that describes what motivates your current work and how you feel participation in the Artists Exchange would influence the development of your career and/or the work that you will be performing. Please describe what aspects of the theme of “Home, far and near” you are most interested in exploring through the workshop process. Please also describe your experience and expectations for working in collaboration with other artists.
5) Please confirm your availability to participate fully in the workshop and performances scheduled as part of the Artists Exchange. If you have any potential scheduling conflicts, please describe.
6) An artistic resume and/or bio (no more than 3 pages).
7) Work sample in digital video format, with 5-minute excerpt selected for viewing. All work should be on DVD or e-mailed.

Asian Arts Initiative is a community-based arts center in Philadelphia that engages artists and everyday people to create art that explores the diverse experiences of Asian Americans, addresses our social context, and imagines and effects positive community change. We host a range of activities including an annual season of performances, our gallery and exhibition series, our Youth Arts Workshop and education programs, and other projects that foster the sharing of stories of Asian Americans and the diverse communities of which we are a part.
