Deadline: 30 April 2011
Enter April’s writing and image competition for a chance to win a compact Canon camera.
In this month’s Writing the City film, Suchen Christine Lim and Jeremy Sheldon talk about characters. For them, strong characters are often ordinary people living in the city, who are experiencing a conflict between their inner and outer worlds.

The Character Snap Competition challenges you to write a ‘character sketch’ – a short piece of prose, poetry or dialogue that creates a strong impression of a character in an urban setting.
Your writing must be accompanied by an image that tells us something about the character and adds to our understanding of the piece. Images may be photographs, sketches or cartoons, but must be the work of the writer.
Dave Chua, author of the graphic novel Gone Case, will judge the competition. He will be looking for writing and images that succeed in showing us a character, rather than simply describing them.
To begin, watch Characters here.
