Job Opening: Senior Writer for Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar
POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Editor, this is a Lead/Individual Contributor position with primary responsibility for the medical and science writing service for all publications and the website of WCMC-Q. Coordinates and oversees the creation of text for the bio-medical research program of WCMC-Q and clinical, faculty projects as required by the organization. Makes regular contributions to the WCMC-Q website providing updates to website text, and developing articles to introduce new research, faculty and clinical developments.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinates with clinical and research faculty on development of stories for the press and inclusion in all WCMC-Q publications both in print, electronic and broadcast formats. Also coordinates with NY and Ithaca Public Affairs on the above.
• Researches and develops medical articles and features for use in regional media.
• Works independently with senior management, scientists and clinical faculty to develop articles and special features.
• Creates a medical advice column in selected local media and develops publications and collaterals in support.
• Works with departments to update content on the website.
• Oversees with the Arabic writer to ensure all English text is translated into Arabic and produced as required.
• Directs the photographer to provide captions to digital images for articles generated.
• Responsible for coordinating the English writing support for updating press information and media kits.
• Coordinates colleagues in the department, researches and provides content of press information such as management biographies and other materials.
• Develops WCMC-Q media information – a summary of the operations of the college with statistical facts and figures.
• Creates written materials required for events at WCMC-Q.
• Performs other job related-duties as required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s Degree in English or Journalism, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 – 7 years prior experience in the fields of public relations; press office/media relations and/or journalism
• Previously demonstrated experience working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in diverse communities

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

• Prior writing for a publishing house, commercial organization or as a journalist.
• Prior experience in the US and Middle East, specifically Qatar.
• Prior experience writing text for websites, or health, medical and science related articles/text for organizations
• Medical/Scientific writing experience and an understanding of complex scientific and health related/medical terms.
• Ability to read and write Arabic.
• Previously demonstrated success in developing and fostering a cooperative collaborative work environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Work is completed in office environment.
• Approximately 70% is computer based.
• The job requires extended and varying work hours to meet demands.

Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar was established in 2001 as a partnership between Cornell University and Qatar Foundation.

The first medical school in Qatar and a pioneer of coeducation at university level, WCMC-Q offers an integrated program of pre-medical and medical studies leading to the Cornell University M.D. degree. Teaching is by Cornell and Weill Cornell faculty, including physicians at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) who hold Weill Cornell appointments.
