Location: Beirut, Lebanon

We are looking for a IT Magazine Journalist and Online Community Manager for the production of an Arabic language e-magazine with stories in written and multimedia format on IT security issues and online safety for online distribution (download, email subscription). The successful candidate will also help with developing the community website (in Arabic) and in building an international online community around the issues of digital security.

Reporting to: Middle East Program Manager

Salary: TBD

Term: Full-Time, 40 Hours a week

Duration: 12 months (3 month probationary period)

Key Areas of Responsibility

* Researching topics for the newsletter
* Writing features, news stories, reviews, interviews and recommendations for the newsletter; producing video tutorials on security issues
* Engaging freelance writers across the Arab world for the newsletter; handling correspondence and communication with freelance writers
* Distributing and promoting the e-magazine among Arab bloggers, journalists and human rights activists
* Developing an Arabic community webpage for the Digital Free Flow project on which content and updates on security can be shared and through which readers can subscribe to the e-magazine. The community page should aim at a maximum outreach through incorporating social media elements.
* Online forum stimulation to promote community page among bloggers and journalists across the Arab world
* Assisting in Digital Security Workshops
* Research about tools and updates in the field of Digital Security
* Reaching out to commercial IT companies and developers in order to engage them in the project
* Other assignments as determined by the Program Manager

Qualifications and Skills

* Native Arabic speaker; good command of English (written and spoken)
* Journalist with at least three years experience in writing, researching and editing
* Good or excellent knowledge of IT and security issues
* Good or excellent knowledge of Arab activism and social media
* Excellent social and networking skills; broad set of tools to build new and to reach out to existing communities
* Organized, punctual and reliable; able to meet deadlines and to work under time pressure
* High work ethics
* Experience managing freelancers
* Strong interest in freedom of speech, human rights and Arab activism

Additional Information

The position is full-time with an initial term of one year (three months probation period), with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding.

The position is based in Beirut. In case of exceptional qualifications, other locations (in the Arab world) could be taken into consideration.

Salary is commensurate with experience. At present, this is a position without Social Security or health benefits (consultancy).
