Pakistan citizens who are in the early to middle stage of their academic careers working in the fields of Arts or Humanities and Social Sciences which are supported at SOAS are eligible to apply.

Who the fellowship is for?

One fellowship is awarded annually by the Centre of South Asian Studies, SOAS and the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust for students who have completed a PhD. Applicants must be a Pakistan national and be residing in Pakistan at the time the application is submitted. The fellowship will be awarded to those who would be ready to make the most of a short period of study and discussion at SOAS. Applications will be encouraged in particular from those scholars who have had no or little opportunity to do research outside Pakistan.

Who is eligible?

Pakistan citizens must be in the early to middle stage of their academic careers working in the fields of Arts or Humanities and Social Sciences which are supported at SOAS. For a list of subjects please check the Taught Masters programmes on the SOAS website. Please note that Humanities and Social Science subjects which are not supported at SOAS will normally not be considered. Those who are already enrolled in any Higher Educational Institution in the United Kingdom (including SOAS) are not eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient English language ability, both written and spoken, to participate in discussions and use resource materials.

What is its value? The Fellowship at present carries a monthly accommodation and living grant, at present £1,250 for up to three months, and an international economy return air fare to London. Please note that it is the responsibility of the successful candidate to arrange accommodation within the limit of the budget.

Criterion The award will be made on the basis of academic merit and research potential. The Centre and the Trust reserve the right not to make an award in the event that no suitable application is received.

Notification of competition result All applicants will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application, generally by the end of October 2011. Late or incomplete applications, including those sent electronically, will not be considered.

Notes for Applicants:

1. Applicants must have completed a PhD and must be working in the fields of ‘Pakistan Studies’ (Arts or Humanities and Social Sciences) which are supported at SOAS. Applicants may not hold the Fellowship for the purpose of, or in conjunction with, enrolment in any Higher Educational Institution in the United Kingdom (including SOAS).
2. Applicants must be a Pakistan national and be residing in Pakistan at the time the application is submitted.
3. Applicants must be in the early to middle stage of their academic careers.
4. Applications will be encouraged in particular from those scholars who have had no or little opportunity to do research outside Pakistan.
5. Candidates must demonstrate sufficient English language ability, both written and spoken, to participate in discussions and use resource materials.
6. Applicants must state if they are in receipt of any other grant, or are awaiting results of other applications. Failure to do so my result in the fellowship being withdrawn.
7. The tenure of the Fellowship should be predominantly during SOAS term-time (January–March) and the Fellow will be based at SOAS, usually sharing an office.
8. As a rule, the Fellow is asked to give a seminar in the Centre of South Asian Studies series. There may be also a chance to give one in another department’s series.
9. The Fellow will be expected to take part in the general intellectual life of the School (e.g. active participation in seminars).
10. Completed applications forms must be submitted to: The Officer Manager, Centres & Programmes Office, SOAS, no later than the stated deadline.
11. All material submitted must be in printed form (except letters of reference).
12. All materials must be submitted in duplicate (except the letters of reference).
13. References can be emailed directly to Jane Savory, centres@soas.ac.uk but must clearly state the candidates name in the subject header.
14. The School may wish to interview the top three candidates via Skype. Further details will be sent to the shortlisted candidates after the closing date.
15. All applicants will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application, generally by the end of October 2011. Applicants who submit an ineligible or incomplete application will not be contacted.
16. At the end of the fellowship the Fellow will submit a final report on their progress (of about 1,000 words) within 1 month of the termination date (which will be published in the South Asian Studies newsletter and on the Centre’s website).
17. The School is authorised to release the names of successful fellows and their research topics as it deems fit.

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: Wednesday, 31 AUGUST 2011

A complete application will comprise:

1. This form duly filled in.
2. A description of research to be carried out in London including an explanation of the need to be in London.
3. Two short examples of published or unpublished work (not more than 20,000 words in all).
4. Two letters of recommendation.
All material submitted must be in printed form and in duplicate (except the letters of reference).
