These are the people who motivate and inspire us as individuals and as a Nation to raise our sights, go beyond our limits and strive towards realising our dreams. Extraordinary achievements never fail to inspire us.


In celebration of the Nation’s 46 years of progress, the SINGAPORE SPIRIT WRITING COMPETITION provides a platform for participants of all ages to inspire and share their perspectives on what 'The Singapore Spirit' means to them and express their sense of nationhood and identity. The competition also aims to foster a love for the English language and to encourage the habit of reading.

The competition is divided into three categories. For each category, five winning entries will be selected.

Category A: Aged 12 and below (500 to 800 words)

Category B: Aged 13 to 18 (800 to 1200 words)

Category C: Aged 19 and above (800 to 1200 words)

The competition is open only to Singapore Citizens, PR and residents in Singapore. All entries must be original, non-fiction and written in English. Entries may only be submitted through this website.

Competition Brief

1.1. The Singapore Spirit Writing Competition 2011 is jointly organized by the National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore, National Day Parade 2011 Executive Committee (NDP 11 EXCO) and Reader’s Digest ASIA (RDA) referred to as the Organisers.

1.2. In celebration of the Nation’s 46 years of progress, the competition provides a platform for participants to share their perspectives on what The Singapore Spirit means to them and express their sense of nationhood and identity. The competition also aims to foster a love for the English language and to encourage the reading habit.

1.3. The theme of the writing competition is “Inspiring Singaporeans”. The synopsis of the theme is as follows:

“One must agree that it is with inspiration that the lion city is able to roar as it is today. Inspiration leads the path for progress. Through progress, we reach new beginnings, new journeys and new future.

To continue the success, it is important to engage Singaporeans with history, culture and identity of our nation with inspirational stories.

Thus, the theme “Inspiring Singaporeans” will invoke reflections and memories of Singaporeans, to share their stories which reflect what the Singapore Spirit is to them that all Singaporeans can be inspired to emulate”.

2. Eligibility and Requirements

2.1. The competition is open to all Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and Singapore Residents

2.2. Only one entry per person is allowed. All entries must be original, non-fiction and written in English. Participants shall warrant that their submissions are original and do not violate the copyright of third parties.

2.3. All entries must be in English, digital word processed copy (type-written) in font size 14, Times New Roman and double line spaced.

2.4. All entries must adhere to the following words limitation in the respective age categories:

Category A: 500 to 800 words

Category B: 800 to 1200 words

Category C: 800 to 1200 words

2.5. All entries must include complete identifying information on the online submission form. All information will be held in the strictest confidence

3. Submission of Entries

3.1. All entries must be submitted online at www.rdasia.com/NDP11-singapore-spirit. All enquiries can be submitted via email to sspirit@readersdigest.com.

3.2. All entries are to be submitted in accordance to the following age categories (as of 01 January 2011)
