Pleiades Theatre is proud to present the first professional Canadian production of Rabindranath Tagore’s great Indian classic, The Post Office. Poetic and deeply moving, The Post Office will be presented at the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs from May 7 to June 4, 2011.
Written in Bengali in 1911, The POST OFFICE is one of the world’s most enduring and enchanting works, reflecting the profound wisdom and humanity of its author, Rabindranath Tagore. Using the grave illness of a young boy as his inspiration, Tagore embarks on a spiritual journey that strips away life’s many encumbrances to take us to those places of timeless and universal truth.
In beautiful, simple prose, Tagore tells the story of a young boy, Amal, confined to his sickbed on doctor's orders. Seated beside his window, he longs to join the world outside, where children play and adults, preoccupied with their daily routines, scurry about in the street. Greeting everyone who passes by his house, from the local curdseller, to the town watchman, to Sudha, the lovely flower girl, Amal ‐ with his huge love of life and engaging curiosity – awakens others to life's simple yet essential truths as he moves toward his own spiritual liberation.
In the traditions of Indian theatre, The Post Office will incorporate dance and music along with the spoken word. 2011 will mark the 100th anniversary of the writing of The Post Office and the 150th anniversary of Tagore’s birth. Fittingly, Pleiades’ production of The Post Office will also be part of 2011: The Year of India in Canada, the Indian Government’s Canada‐wide celebration of Indian arts and culture. This first‐of‐its‐kind event will highlight the growing bonds between out two countries and Pleiades Theatre is very proud to be among the few Canadian companies involved in this important occasion.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941) is still considered the Poet Laureate of India and in 1913, he was the first non‐European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
