Calling All Muslims of the Philadelphia Area, Document and Tell Your Own Story!

Muslim Voices of Philadelphia Project is a media project of Scribe Video Center that calls on all interested members of the Muslim community in Philadelphia to work with videomakers, digital media artists and scholars to document the histories, practices and contributions of the many Muslims who have come to call the Philadelphia region home. The project hopes to assist the Philadelphia Muslim community to gain the knowledge and technical skills to document and tell their own story connecting archival research, oral history and digital media. The project is free-of-charge to participating groups.

Muslim Voices of Philadelphia is a media project of Scribe Video Center that calls on all interested members of the Muslim community in Philadelphia to work with videomakers, digital media artists and scholars to document the histories, practices and contributions of the many Muslims who have come to call the Philadelphia region home.

The Muslim Voices project hopes to assist the Philadelphia Muslim community to gain the knowledge and technical skills to document and tell their own story connecting archival research, oral history and digital media. Participants will create documents and media that can be used by Philadelphia’s Muslim communities, advocacy groups, museums, schools, universities, libraries, and will be available for public broadcast and community screenings.

During the current planning phase, interested Muslim groups are invited to apply to participate in a series of workshops, running from April through October 2011, which will help them develop production and research skills, and develop a script or outline of a final media project. Media projects can consist of a video, website, podcast, etc. The planning phase will be followed by an implementation phase, during which each masjid or community organization, with the help of scholarly and production facilitators, will finalize and implement their media project. While facilitators will work closely with participants throughout the course of implementation, the work itself—the planning, writing, recording, filming, designing—will be done by the members of the community groups. The implementation or production phase will begin by the end of 2011.

This program is free-of-charge for Islamic organizations in the Philadelphia area, and no prior experience in media-making is required.

We’re looking for

• Groups that have the time and capacity to produce a video or media project
• Stories that will have an impact and be of interest to the public at large
• Groups that have some clear use for the final media project

Producing a media project is a chance to honor the local experience and to become the author, not just the subject, of your community’s history. In the process of completing a useful videotape, group members will develop professional production skills they can continue to use to uncover the rich stories of our past and present.

Funding for the Muslim Voices of Philadelphia Project is provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Heritage Philadelphia Program.

To apply, please download the Muslim Voices Application below and send completed application to the Scribe Video Center 4212 Chestnut St. Philadelphia, PA 19104 or fax to 215-222-4205
