This contest and educational awards are sponsored by Mr. Roshan Goel, the Blackstone Group (bgglobal.com), and PenPal Notes (PenpalNotes.com).
Essay Topic
Ignorance of the consequences of human action always plays a major part in the degradation of our environment. Science dispels ignorance. Choose an example of environmental degradation that is taking place at present and describe the scientific research you think is needed to help make people aware of the consequences of our action. Besides scientific understanding, in a democratic society, what else is needed to bring an end to this instance of environmental degradation?
Submission Deadline: Monday, April 4, 2011
Essay Background
Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam is an eminent scientist and aeronautical engineer who was elected the eleventh President of India, a position he held between 2002 and 2007. He became unusually popular during his time in office because he was very accessible; he opened the doors of the splendid Presidential Palace—built during colonial times as the residence of the Viceroy of India—to the people of the nation. He became known as “the People’s President.” After retiring from the Presidency Dr. Kalam has dedicated himself, among other things, to encouraging young people to advance their educations, to study science, and to do all their work with integrity. He has become the “Environment Ambassador” of India, asking people everywhere to think about what we are doing to nature and how we can stop degrading our world.
Dr. Kalam has accepted an invitation to visit Chicago under the auspices of the Indo-American Center of Chicago, a community service organization that was created by Chicago’s Indian immigrant community. He will speak to a Chicago audience at the Oak Brook Marriott Hotel on the evening of April 24, 2011.
