Call for Submissions: Occupied (Students for Justice in Palestine's art-based magazine)
Deadline: 11 March 2011

Students for Justice in Palestine at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) is creating an art-based zine about Palestine entitled “Occupied”. Our intention is to publish a new edition of the zine every few months, and we hope to sell them at local bookstores and zine-fests. The zine will be sold as a fundraiser for SJP projects and events for Palestine.

SJP at SAIC is putting out a call for submissions for any and all original fine-art, photography, poetry, prose, essays, comics, posters etc. for publication in “Occupied”. If you think it will photocopy nicely and would be a good addition, please email it to us with “OCCUPIED” in the subject line and we will be in contact with you about your submission. Include your name and organization/school if you’d like it included, or let us know if you’d like to be anonymous. Email all submissions and/or questions to sjpsaic@gmail.com. Deadline is March 11th.

Please see our mission statement below if you are not familiar with our group, and keep in mind what our goal is when considering a submission to OCCUPIED. Thank you!

Mission Statement:

Students for Justice in Palestine at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago is a diverse group of artists organized on democratic principles to advocate for Palestinian rights using inventive and creative strategies. We aim to generate dialogue amongst the student body through the arts and advocate using the arts as a means of resistance. By methods of self-publishing, fine-art, street performance and other forms of production we hope to give a voice to a people not often heard on the SAIC campus.

While we recognize that the Palestinians must decide their own future for themselves, as an advocacy group we call for the full decolonization of all illegally held Palestinian lands; the end of the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem; the implementation of the right of return and repatriation for all Palestinian refugees to their original homes and properties; and an end to the Israeli system of Apartheid and discrimination against the indigenous Palestinian population.

Our SJP adheres to a core set of principles to which all members must adhere, condemning all racism and discrimination underlying the policies of all governments involved in the issue. We invite all students of every ethnic and religious background to become involved in SJP and to our weekly meetings for open discussions. We believe that in an artistic community as vibrant as SAIC’s, we can use our creativity to achieve social change and reach people in effective and honest ways.
