Goal

The goal is to honor and recognize individual work about Asian/Pacific Americans and their heritage, based on literary and artistic merit.

Awards

Each award will be announced at the 2012 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Dallas, TX along with the Youth Literary Award. Winners of the APALA Literature award will be given the award seal during the 2012 APALA Literature Award Ceremony. The winner of each category will receive a plaque during the 2012 American Library Association Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA. Press releases will be sent to various national publications. The Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature is now an annual event.

Eligible Works

1. Works eligible must have had premier publication in 2011 and must have been published for general commercial release in the U.S.

2. Award categories (five categories) are:

a. Adult
* Adult Fiction
* Adult Non-Fiction

b. Youth Literature (Fiction)
* Children’s Literature
* Literature for Teens (Young Adults)

c. Picture Books

3. Works should be related to Asian/Pacific Heritage, not necessarily written by or illustrated by an Asian/Pacific American. The individual must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

4. Works must have been published by a large publishing house, trade or small press/publisher located in the United States or one of its territories. Self-published works and exclusive Internet publications are not eligible.

5. Anthologies or books containing the work of more than one author are not eligible.

6. Works must be originally written in English.

7. Works that have previously won other prizes or recognition are eligible.

8. If no books are found to meet the selection criteria, no award will be given.

Entry of Works

1. Entries may be submitted by an author, publisher, agent, publicist or individual.
2. The Literary Award Committee is not responsible for lost submissions.
3. An author, publisher, publicist or agent may submit more than one entry per author, but not more than one entry per work.
4. Entries must be received by the APALA Literature Award Committee Chair before September 30, 2011 to be eligible for the award. All entries received after October 1, 2011 will not be consider for the 2012 award. This is due to a procedure change of the committee.
5. Publisher that wishes to submit any work after October 1, please consult chair for a new committee roster to receive books after October 1.
