Description:
The New York bureau of the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper is looking for a researcher/assistant reporter in our office in midtown. The job will involve, though not be limited to, gathering information and arranging/conducting interviews with key sources for news articles and features. The coverage area includes all of North and South America, with particular focus on the auto industry, social issues, politics, the economy, new media, and international affairs.
Most days will be spent in the office but there is an opportunity for periodic travel. Experience with Japanese language and culture is helpful, but it’s not required. All articles are written in Japanese by senior correspondents and you will collaborate with them in English. Spanish proficiency is strongly desired for Latin American news coverage.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor and research news developments in U.S. economics, politics, and foreign affairs
• Cover press conferences and other important meetings and events
• Conduct in-person and telephone interviews with sources
• Develop and maintain relationships with key contacts
• Help out with basic administrative duties in our office
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate is resourceful and flexible, able to juggle multiple tasks on deadline, and has good news instinct and is aiming for a career in journalism. We are seeking a reliable individual who is able to work with a wide range of people. You must have excellent writing and communication skills and be willing to occasionally work late nights with little prior notice.
You must have a Bachelor's degree, native-level English, and a minimum of one year of experience working in journalism or media. A valid driver’s license and legal working status in the US is required. We would prefer a minimum of one year commitment to the position.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Spanish language proficiency (spoken and written)
• Basic photography skills
• Journalism or communications experience
COMPENSATION:
We offer a competitive salary and comprehensive health and dental insurance. The work week is Monday through Friday and circumstances may warrant occasional nights and weekends with overtime pay.
