Description: Initiated by the Publicity Department of the CPC Zhuhai Municipal Committee to emphasise artistic quality and the influence of poems, the biennial prize is meant to mine deep-rooted historical and cultural resources, enrich the city’s cultural significance and enhance its character. The poetry prize is designed to promote more outstanding poets and poetry in the population and thus contribute to the development of China’s poetry. Starting in 2011 the city government will appropriate 6 million yuan ($902,000) annually as the Artwork Creation Assistance & Prize Fund encompassing the Fisher Maiden Prize, Su Manshu Poetry Prize and Gu Yuan Fine Arts Prize. The award is named after Su Manshu (1884-1919), a revolutionary monk, novelist and poet, had translated Victor Hugo’s novel Les Miserables, The Selected Poems of Byron, poems of Scottish poet Robert Burns, British poet William Howitt, and Indian female poet Toludou into Chinese.
