Reuters is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic reporter to cover commodities in Indonesia, one of the most important markets in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the leading producer of palm oil and is a top producer of coffee, cocoa, and rubber. The successful candidate will be required to consistently break news, write market reports and analyses. Deep understanding on how these markets work is a crucial requirement for the job. The candidate will be required to know how government policies, environmental issues and social factors impact commodity trade flows. The beat is a particularly interesting one given the importance of palm oil - and the environmental concerns that accompany the expansion of Indonesia's vast oil palm plantations - as well as Indonesia's efforts to develop vast food estates in the easternmost part of the country, a policy beset with social, logistical and infrastructure difficulties. Building a solid network of contacts, strong news judgement and the ability to produce quick and accurate copy are key requirements for this job. The successful candidate will need to work closely with reporters in other centres on regional themes, deliver stories with regional and global context and help identify emerging trends and themes and initiate story ideas. The successful candidate will add value, insight and multimedia flair to our regional stories.
Qualifications
• At least three years experience reporting on a real time news file;
• Strong understanding of the palm, cocoa, coffee and sugar markets;
• Ability to take lead on regional story themes;
• Proven track record of breaking news and writing stories to cater to a wider audience;
• Proven track record of strong news judgment and writing skills;
• Good inter-personal skills to work well with a variety of teams
