Job Description
The University of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Minority Identities in the Arab World, within the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World (CASAW), to begin January 2011. This post is a one-year fixed term contract.
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct and present research engaging with aspects of the emergence and development of minority communities in the Arab Middle East from the 19th century to the present day, addressing issues of statelessness and the creation of refugee communities. S/he will contribute to the work of CASAW through undertaking teaching and administrative duties and play a part in promoting the Centre's existing and upcoming teaching and outreach programmes. The post would be ideal for a recent PhD graduate in the history or politics of the Arab world, or any other relevant discipline.
The ideal post holder will have an established record or potential in achieving excellence in research and publication. A knowledge of Arabic and teaching experience is desirable.
Environment
The Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World comprises a consortium of the Universities of Edinburgh, Durham and Manchester. CASAW brings together world-class scholars from the three universities and provides a coordinated approach to teaching and research dealing with the Arab world at postgraduate and postdoctoral level. In Edinburgh, CASAW operates in partnership with the department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, a dynamic department committed to excellence in teaching and research, with a distinguished record in Islamic Studies and the interdisciplinary study of the Middle East, as well as the new Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World.
Conditions of Employment
The candidate appointed will be eligible to contribute to the University's Superannuation Scheme (USS), for which the current contribution is 6.35% of annual salary with the University contributing a sum equal to 14% of annual salary to USS.
