Terracotta Typewriter is currently accepting submissions.
Terracotta Typewriter seeks submissions of literary works with a connection to China. The definition of “connection to China” can be stretched as much as an author sees fit. For example, expatriate writers living in China or who have lived in China, Chinese writers writing in English, translators of Chinese writing, works that are set in China, manuscripts covered in Chinese food (General Tso’s chicken doesn’t count), or anything else a creative mind can imagine as a connection to China.
We accept works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, translations, and reviews and interviews.
Guidelines:
Please send submissions as Microsoft Word documents to: tctype@gmail.com
Subject lines should read: “submission [category] [your name]”
Please include a brief biography. You may include links to any sites you own or write for.
Fiction/non-fiction: As this is an online journal, works of fiction and non-fiction should not be too lengthy. Try to keep it under five pages or query if you would like to submit more. We will consider excerpts from larger works as well as flash fiction and the like. We don’t mind profanity, violence, or sex as long as it is used appropriately (i.e. nothing gratuitous). Please double-space your submissions.
Poetry: Submit up to five at a time (no more than seven pages, please). Rhythm and rhyme are cool but not necessary for great poetry. Because we are using WordPress as our template, we regret that we cannot accept any highly stylized works a la e.e. cummings, unless you submit a jpg file of the poem.
Translations: We would like to publish translations of Chinese literature. You may submit the work as long as you have the rights to translate and publish from the author or copyright holder. Please follow the guidelines of the category to which it belongs and also send a copy of the original Chinese text.
Reviews & Interviews: Submit reviews of literature, art, or events that are related to China (i.e. Chinese art exhibits, translated novels, movies). Please keep the reviews under 750 words. We will also accept interviews with Chinese writers or artists (photos are also nice to include with this).
Simultaneous submissions & previously published work: We encourage simultaneous submissions by authors. However, please be courteous and tell us if your work has been accepted elsewhere. We promise to make every effort to respond to all submissions in a timely manner, and we ask for your patience in return. We will also consider previously published work as long as you have the legal right to republish the material. However, we would rather not republish work that is still available online. Please mention in your submission e-mail if your work has been previously published.
Rights & Permissions: Upon acceptance of your work, you grant Terracotta Typewriter one-time publication rights and archival rights. The copyright to your work remains your own and you are free to republish your work in the future.
Privacy Policy: Terracotta Typewriter respects the privacy of writers. We will not send any unwanted e-mails to you–we hate spam too. We will not sell your address to any third-parties. We may, however, send you invitations to read future issues of our literary journal or to attend events.
Terracotta Typewriter does not pay at this time, but we will do our best to promote your work in a professional manner. Advertising on this site pays the bills for maintaining the site. Anything that remains after the bills have been paid will go toward hosting an annual contest and/or paying writers of accepted work in the future.
