Journalism and Media Studies Teaching Position at the University of Hong Kong

Applications are invited for appointment as (a) Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor or (b) Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor (of Practice), in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC), from as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. The appointee for post (a) may be considered for tenure after satisfactory completion of a second fixed-term contract. One of the posts will be made under the Centenary Recruitment Plan (CRP). The Journalism and Media Studies Centre is located in the leading international media hub in Asia, and provides instruction at graduate and undergraduate levels. Its former students hold positions at major wire-service, print, broadcast and Web-based media throughout the world. It is a teaching and research department offering professional programmes leading to Bachelor of Journalism and Master of Journalism degrees, and research programmes leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees through the Faculty of Social Sciences. Applicants should have expertise in one of the following areas: business journalism, health and risk communication, broadcast journalism, online journalism and social media; as well as previous experience in journalism. For post (a), applicants should preferably have a Ph.D. degree, proven potential for high quality research and substantial teaching experience at graduate level. The appointee will be expected to pursue an active research programme, teach and engage in service/administration duties. For post (b), applicants should have substantial professional experience in international news organization(s). They should have a passion for teaching and be committed to continued involvement in the profession as a researcher, writer or editor. Those with international exposure, as well as knowledge of multimedia platforms for journalism content, and an earned advanced degree will have a definite advantage. Administrative experience is also preferred.

Annual salaries will be in the following ranges (subject to review from time to time at the entire discretion of the University):

Professor : HK$848,820 – 1,188,900

Associate Professor : HK$626,400 – 968,700

Assistant Professor : HK$477,360 – 737,700

(approximately US$1 = HK$7.8)

Applicants should indicate clearly which post and level they wish to be considered for. The level of appointment and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave, and medical/dental benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.
