Sheikh Zayed Book Award has extended the date for accepting nominations to 15th September 2010 instead of mid August 2010. This announcement was made by the Rashid Al Araimi, the Secretary General of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award in the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010. A seminar entitled Arts in Contemporary Arabic Literature was conducted on the sidelines of the Damascus International Book Fair held under the patronage and presence of Syrian Minister of Culture Dr. Riyad Nassan Agha. The seminar was chaired by Mohammed Al Murr, Advisory Body member for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, and with the participation of three award winners: Iyad Hussein Abdullah, Iraq, Fine Arts award winner, 4th session; Maher Radi, Egypt, Fine Art award winner, 3rd session; and Mahmoud Zein Al Abideen, Syria, Young Author award winner, 1st session.

Al Araimi commented during the seminar that the Sheikh Zayed Book Award seeks to strengthen the role of creativity, science and thought, adding that this award has had the positive effect of highlighting the brimming talent living within this nation. Al Araimi went on to give a detailed description of the nine categories of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award: Cultural Personality of the Year; Best Contribution to the Development of the Country; Children's Literature; Young Author; Translation; Literature; Fine Arts; Best Technology in the Field of Culture; and Publishing and Distribution.

For his part, Dr. Riyad Nassan Agha, Syrian Minister of Culture commented that the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan exerted much effort to support Arab culture, adding that this award is for all intellectuals not UAE authors alone. "Our Arab books are not affected by borders, and it is from this horizon the Sheikh Zayed Book Award was launched. Sheikh Zayed was the big heart that took everyone under in its grace. His Highness' most important achievement was the care and attention bestowed on the UAE's Arab heritage." He added that the UAE has been active in numerous projects of a strategic nature, including translation and the automation of Arab culture; and he praised the efforts of Emirati men, such as Sultan Al Owais, Juma Al Majid, and others.

Aga also commended the efforts of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the UAE leaders who were able to drive and maintain this rich cultural movement, pointing out that the Sheikh Zayed Book Award believes in Arab culture as a whole. He added that it does not recognize geographical boundaries, as long as this creativity stems from the Arabic language, the mother of this nation's children, a nation which extends from the Atlantic Ocean westward to the Arabian Sea and the Gulf east to the Gulf.
