Ma-Yi Theater Presents Palanca 2010 Award-Winning Play "One Day at the Carnival" by Nicolas Pichay
When: 13 September 2010
Where: Philippine Center, New York

The Ma-Yi Theatre Company presents “Parks and Wildlife” an evening program featuring two plays by Nicolas B. Pichay, One Day at the Carnival (directed by Ching Valdez-Aran) and The Adoption Play (directed by Victor Maog), to be presented as a staged reading on 13 September 2010, 6:30pm at the Philippine Center, New York.

Carnival tells the story of the desaparecido experience in the Philippines through the voices of two young people as they amble along an amusement park in Manila. The two friends let themselves be lured to take a rollercoaster ride, only to find themselves booked in the longest ride to hell. The play won first place in this year’s Palanca, the Philippines’ top literary award.

Pichay is regarded as one of the Philippines’ leading literary mavericks. A poet, translator and writer for stage, television and film, Pichay has won major literary prizes in the Philippines given by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the National Centennial Commission, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and has been inducted to the Palanca Hall of Fame, for having garnered at least five first prizes (Carnival being the sixth). His play Bilog (The Unending Drawing of Circles) has been presented, at the Festival du Avignon-Off. His other plays have been staged in San Francisco and the Netherlands. Pichay has been compared by National Artist Virgilio Almario to a household lizard that “is adept at observing peoples’ daily rituals of survival.” Another theatre critic, Gibbs Cadiz says of his work: “Sharp, sly, funny—Mr. Pichay’s plays sends up our enduring sociocultural traumas with penetrating finesse and fearlessness.”

Come. Partake of the literary fruits of Mr. Pichay's New York summer. The Philippine Center is located at 556 Fifth Avenue, New York. Admission is free. For ticket reservations, please call Ma-Yi at 212-9714862.
