Don't miss the next installment of our ever-popular FAMILY STYLE open mic series hosted by YELLOW RAGE. This month features BAO PHI, a visionary Vietnamese American, award winning poet and community leader from the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Come support YELLOW RAGE and BAO PHI who will perform this month’s theme, “Surviving the Translation.” For this special performance, proceeds will go towards humanitarian aid in flood stricken Pakistan.
BAO PHI has been a performance poet since 1991. A two-time Minnesota Grand Slam champion and a National Poetry Slam finalist, Bao Phi has appeared on HBO Presents Russell Simmons Def Poetry. His poems are widely published numerous publications including Screaming Monkeys, Spoken Word Revolution Redux and the 2006 Best American Poetry Anthology. He has also released several CDs of his poetry, such as the recently sold-out Refugeography to his newest CD, The Nguyens EP. He has performed as a featured artist and speaker in over a hundred venues and schools across the country, from the Nuyorican Poets Café to the University of California, Berkeley.
Currently he continues to perform across the country, remains active as an Asian American community organizer, writes a popular and provocative blog on the Twin Cities’ Star Tribune's Your Voices community blog, and works at the Loft in Minneapolis, where he creates and operates programs for artists and audiences of color.
