Eligibility
To be eligible to participate in The Diplomat 2010 Essay Competition, you must be:
1. Aged between 18 and 25 years old on October 1, 2010.
2. A citizen or permanent resident of any member country of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.*
3. Not affiliated with The Diplomat either directly or through a family member.
4. Must be enrolled at an accredited university as of August 30, 2010.

Essay Question
Fifteen years ago, APEC leaders meeting in Japan called for joint action ‘to ensure the region’s economic prosperity is sustainable.’ But is it realistic to believe that APEC’s largest member, China, can grow rapidly and sustainably?
Prizes
* First Prize: Round trip ticket to Tokyo, five days hotel accommodation and daily stipend during this year’s APEC ministers and economic leaders’ summit in Yokohama (Nov. 10 – 14, 2010). The winner will have the opportunity to cover the event with The Diplomat, meet with officials at the conference, conduct interviews and attend press conferences. The winning essay will also be published on The Diplomat’s website.

Guidelines
* Essays should be written in English and must not exceed 2000 words.
* The contestant’s name should not be written in the document and should instead be included in the accompanying email.
* All entries should be submitted as a Microsoft Word® document (.doc, .docx) or Rich Text File and typed in 12pt Times New Roman with 2.0 paragraph spacing.
* Only one entry per student is allowed.
* Entries must be received by 12:00 pm midday, Japan Standard Time on August 30, 2010. No late entries will be accepted.
* Students whose work is short-listed may be asked to provide evidence of enrollment at an accredited university.
* Entries must be sent as email attachments to essaycomp@the-diplomat.com with the subject heading ‘Essay contest’ and must include the student’s name as it appears on their passport, date of birth, university of enrollment and name of course enrolled on as well as a contact telephone number. Personal details and applications MUST be sent together or entries will not be accepted.
* Only entrants short-listed for panel judging will be contacted.
* Relatives, employees or students of any member of the judging panel and/or The Diplomat are NOT eligible to enter the contest.
* The Diplomat will contact the author of the winning essay in writing by mail or email and by telephone by September 21 2010 to confirm his/her eligibility under the terms and conditions of the Competition and to confirm whether the author wishes to claim his/her prize. The winning entry will be announced at The Diplomat subsequent to confirmation of the winner.
* There is no fee for entry.
* The Diplomat reserves the right to reject any essay submitted, and to withhold awarding of prizes should it deem it appropriate. The judges’ decision is final.
* By submitting an essay, the student is confirming that all material is original and has not been published elsewhere under the entrant’s or any other name. Where others’ work is referenced, the entrant agrees to make clear through appropriate referencing either in the body of the essay text or through footnotes.
* The student confirms that by submitting their essay that they have no personal connection with any members of the judging panel and/or any named sponsors of the competition.
* All entries become the property of The Diplomat.
Competition Rules
Please read the following rules carefully. By entering The Diplomat 2010 Essay Competition (the “Competition”) you will be deemed to have agreed to these rules and all other terms and conditions of the Competition.
1. Only one entry per person is permitted.
2. Prizes are not transferable and/or negotiable or redeemable for cash.
3. To claim first prize, you must be in the possession of a valid passport and legally permitted to travel to Japan.
4. To be declared a winner, you may need to return a signed release of liability and acknowledgment form. Competition judges’ rulings are final and without appeal in all matters related to the promotion and the awarding of prizes.
5. The First Prize winner will be awarded a trip to Yokohama, Japan, to coincide with the APEC ministers and economic leaders’ summit in Yokohama (Nov. 10 – 14, 2010). Trip includes round trip coach airfare from a major airport closest to winner’s home, standard hotel accommodations, and select meals during the Worldwide Finals. The Approximate Retail Value (ARV) of this prize is: USD$3500.00.
6. Actual value of travel prize depends on date/time/destination, and difference between actual value and stated value will not be awarded in cash. Any expenses not explicitly listed herein are the sole responsibility of the entrant.
7. If you meet the eligibility criteria for the Competition, but you are a minor in your place of residence, then your parent/legal guardian will be required to execute a Liability and Publicity Release on your behalf.
8. You are responsible for providing all required travel documents, including, but not limited to any required travel visas and passports required for international travel.
9. If you live within 250 miles (400 kilometres) of the travel destination, we reserve the right to substitute alternate transportation for air travel.
10. Event dates and location are subject to change at our sole discretion. Therefore, you must have flexible travel capabilities.
