The 7th Lamiraw Regional Creative Writing Workshop of the Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) will be held on November 9-12, 2010 in Calbayog City, Samar.
This year’s workshop features a new addition—the Chito Roño Literary Awards for poetry, fiction and drama—which will be launc...hed during the opening ceremony. The workshop’s keynote speaker will be no less than Chito Roño, renowned film director who is a native of Calbayog, and who is also the sponsor of said contest. In order to boost the revival of the literature of Eastern Visayas, entries for the contest must be written in Waray, Sebuano and Inabaknon. Details for the Chito Roño Literary Awards will be announced in June.
Established in 2004 by Harold L. Mercurio with the support of Prof. Merlie M. Alunan of UPV Tacloban’s VisWrite, the Lamiraw Workshop has captured the interest of promising writers across the country after it has opened its doors to regional writers in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Consequently, it has earned the reputation as the most dynamic and ethnic-friendly regional workshop in the country.
The Lamiraw workshop is open to entries in Waray, Sebuano, Inabaknon, English and other regional languages in Philippines. This year’s panelists are: Prof. Merlie Alunan and Dr. Leoncio Deriada, professors emeritus of UP Visayas; Dr. Victor Sugbo of UPV Tacloban; Dr. David Genotiva of Eastern Visayas State University; Prof. Timothy Montes of UP Mindanao; Mr. Voltaire Oyzon of Leyte Normal University; Mr. Dante Rosales of Ibabao Arts Council of Calbayog; and Mr. Harold Mercurio of Northwest Samar State University. The Lamiraw workshop is one of the regional workshops accredited by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Guidelines for Applicants
1. Download the application form posted at Panitikan.com and the NCCA website.
2. Qualifications of Applicants
a. An applicant does not need to have any prior experience in attending creative writing workshops. Helping promising young and adult writers in Eastern Visayas as well as regional writers across the country is the main thrust of the workshop. Moreover, the workshop aims to revive the interest in Waray, Sebuano and Inabaknon writing in Region 8.
b. Applicants should submit any of the following (or any reasonable combination of genres):
Poetry – three poems with translation in Filipino or English (if written in a regional language)·
Short Story – one short story with translation in Filipino or English (if written in a regional language)·
Essay – two essays of average length written in English·
Play – a one-act play
3. Entries should be encoded in MS Word format, Arial, font 12, double spaced on regular sized bond paper.
4. One hard copy and a soft copy in CD (MS Word format) of each entry must be submitted with the application form. Also include two 2x2 pictures in JPEG format. A statement from a person of authority (an established writer or a notary public) attesting to the originality of the submitted work should also be included.
