Term of Position:
* 12 months per year
* Full-time (40 hours per week)
* Position reports to the Academic Success Center and Writing Center Directors.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Communicate frequently, openly and efficiently with relevant stake holders (Director of Academic Success Center, Director of Writing Center and tutoring staff) regarding program needs, services provided and student issues.
* Responsible for the guidance and provision of Writing Center services throughout the day as assigned by Directors.
Instruction:
* Provide individual and small group tutoring to students from diverse backgrounds and with varied learning abilities.
* Assist students in the development of effective study and learning strategies (note-taking, test-taking, studying skills etc.) to maximize students' potential for academic progress.
* Instruct classroom units per faculty request as scheduled by the Writing Center Director.
Writing Center:
* Assist students with the review of their papers with the goal of helping them become better writers.
* Facilitate learning as a guide and coach to assist students in becoming successful, independent learners.
* Provide regularly scheduled training sessions for ASC tutors to assure that tutors are proficient and effective when working with students.
* Work with the Writing Center Director to train and mentor peer tutors in how to work with students, effective strategies, disability equipment and support, and ASC procedures.
Additional Tasks, as assigned:
* Provide administrative and Learning Lab support to the department.
* Contribute to the monthly ASC newsletter.
* Assist with provision of student disability services (proctoring tests, equipment use etc.).
* Assist with training, coordination and supervision of student tutors.
* Evening coverage and training within the ASC.
* Give classroom presentations to students on ASC services and academic skill development.
* Meet with the ASC Director to plan appropriate academic support for students.
* Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.
* Work with ASC and Writing Center Directors to assess peer tutors each semester.
Qualifications:
* Master degree in English, Communications, Secondary/Higher Education or related field strongly preferred. Bachelors degree in English or Secondary Education will be considered.
* Experience teaching in a secondary or higher education institution is strongly encouraged.
* Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities, is preferred.
* Excellent writing and communication skills.
