Qais Sedki's debut book, Siwar al Dahab (Gold Ring), is an illustrated book that took five years to finish. The novel won for the 33-year old writer this year's Sheikh Zayed Book Award, worth Dh750,000. The book was inspired by Japanese manga artists and tells the story of a 15-year old Sultan and his falcon as they compete in Gold Ring, a fictional sport.

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award is independent and neutral, it is presented every year to outstanding Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talent whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life. It received a total of 620 nominations from all parts of the world. The Award also received nominations from France, Sweden, Germany, Malta, and the United States.

The award was established under the patronage and support of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture& Heritage. It is supervised by a Higher Committee that sets the general policies and a Consultative Council to follow-up on its operational mechanisms. The value of the award totals AED 7 million.
