Maurice Baker Scholarship and Literary Prize (Singapore)
The NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) launched the Maurice Baker Scholarship and the Maurice Baker Prize on 8 December 2009. Aimed at grooming literary scholars, the Scholarship and Prize are named after Dr Maurice Baker, an eminent NUS alumnus and one of Singapore's first-generation diplomats. The Scholarship and Prize are funded by the Maurice Baker Fund. To-date, it had raised close to S$140,000 and it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Singapore government.

Dr Baker's former students Chairman of Temasek Holdings, Mr S Dhanabalan and NUS Emeritus Prof Edwin Thumboo as well as Dean of FASS, Prof Tan Tai Yong and Head of the NUS Department of English Language and Literature, Assoc Prof Robbie Goh, attended the event to mark the launch of the Scholarship and Prize.

The Maurice Baker Scholarship, valued at S$10,000 per year, will offer financial support to one deserving full-time Singaporean or Singapore permanent resident graduate student enrolled in the PhD or the Masters of Arts by research programme in the NUS Department of English Language and Literature. The first scholarship will be awarded in the academic year starting August 2010.
