Deadline:
EDITORIAL TEAM
Hyphen is looking for credible, smart, bookish, overachieving, dusty-fingered, detailed-oriented and opinionated editors and writers. Our staff members are news junkies who are interested in social justice issues, politics and pop culture. There is no money involved, just the experience of working alongside the finest Asian American minds that community college ever produced.
We're especially looking for people in the following areas:
Staff Writers
We’re on the lookout for staff writers who can contribute regularly to the print magazine, website and blog.
For the print magazine, we want our writers to come up with stories that are both fun and serious, as long as it's well written and solidly reported.
For the web, we're looking for writers would contribute current-events oriented feature stories or post news items regularly to our blog. This person would be self-starter who can find interesting stories for an online audience.
Issues that affect Asian Americans are what we want for both writing positions. Please, no Asian American Studies 101 and nothing about people or events in Asia. We cover Asian America, not Asia. And absolutely nothing with the phrase “East meets West.” Previous journalistic writing experience desired, but we're open to newcomers.
To contribute on a freelance basis, see our submission guidelines.
Web Editors
Help enhance Hyphen's Internet presence. If you can tweet, Facebook, edit, write and know what HTML stands for, we're looking for you. The web editors work with editorial, social media, blog and tech team members to keep Hyphen's website fresh and current. Familiarity with Drupal a plus.
Features Editor and Deputy Features Editors
Help develop the in-depth stories that anchor the magazine. We're looking for a team of editors to put together stories that explore a more complex representation of Asian America that is missing from most media. They can be serious, they can be funny, but most of all they are enlightening and well-crafted.
Arts and Entertainment Editor
Hyphen needs an editor who can take charge of our books, movies, music and literature sections and lead our coverage of up-and-coming writers, filmmakers and musicians. You'll help edit stories and conceptualize Hyphen's entertainment content.
BLOGGERS
Hyphen is looking for writers with style and sass to blog for us. Hyphen bloggers need to have an engaging, conversational style consistent with the Hyphen voice, and be highly informed about Asian American culture and politics. Bloggers must commit to posting at least once per month on topics of interest to Asian America. Bloggers should have basic HTML editing skills and be familiar with AP style. Interested applicants, please send a resume and three examples of your work to blog editors erin Khue Ninh and Sylvie Kim at erin[at]hyphenmagazine.com, and sylvie.kim[at]hyphenmagazine.com.
