Yashwantrao Balwantrao Chavan was the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra after the division of Bombay State and the fifth Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a strong Congress leader, Co-operative leader, social activist and writer. He was popularly known as Leader of Common People. He advocated social democracy in his speeches and articles and was instrumental in establishing co-operatives in Maharashtra for the betterment of the farmers.
The Nagpur division center of Yashwantrao Chavan Open University is currently accepting entries for a poetry competition in honor of Yashwantrao Chavan. Two copies of poems written in Marathi may be sent to rd-nagpur@ycmou.digitaluniversity.ac or the YCMOU office (D Laxminarayan Bungalow, near University ground, Ravi Nagar, Nagpur) until October 13th. The entry should include an affidavit of originality.
Prize distribution and Kavi Sammelan of selected poets will be held on October 18. The top three winners will receive cash prizes of Rs 3.000. Rs 2,000, and Rs 1.000. There will be two consolation prizes of Rs 500 each. The contest is open to all poets.
