World Space Week is an important international event celebrated all across the world during the week October 4-10 every year. These two dates commemorate two important milestones in space exploration:

World Space Week is an important international event celebrated all across the world during the week October 4-10 every year. These two dates commemorate two important milestones in space exploration:
- 4th October being the date on which the first man made satellite, Sputnik-1 was put in orbit in 1957
- 10th October being the date on which the UN declaration for peaceful uses of outer space came into force.

ESSAY COMPETITION RULES:
- Theme: Space for Human Safety and Security
- Students of class 8, 9 or 10 can participate in the competition.
- Essays can be in English, Hindi or Malayalam. Three prizes in each category.
- Essays should be hand written on one side of A4 size paper and should not exceed 2000 words.
- Essays should reach the address below on or before 30th September, 2012
- A certificate from the Head Master / Principal of the school and a covering letter containing full address, phone number with STD code and e-mail address (if any) must be enclosed with the essay.
- The envelope should be super scribed with 'WSW-2012 Essay Competition'.
- The Best Essay will win the GSLV Gold Medal. Prizes will be distributed at the Valedictory Function of World Space Week celebrations at Thiruvananthapuram.
