In conjunction with READ! Singapore 2012, the Flash Fiction Writing Competitin is jointly organized by National Library Board and Singapore Press Holdings Ltd., in collaboration with National Arts Council. The competition is in English only, consisting of these three categories:
Participants are required to write a short story of not more than 500 words and submit their entries via email. Participants are to choose one of these lead-in sentences to start their stories:

- Along the way, I caught glimpses of the railway tracks...
- Doors closing. please stand clear of the doors.
- The time has come...
- No entry fee is required.
- All entries are to be submitted via e-mail. Please include your name (as in NRIC), NRIC number, age and mobile number in your submission.
- All entries must be original works in English. Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-party poetry, song lyrics, characters or another person's ideas, without writen permission or proper acknowledgement will result in disqualification.
- Excessive violence, sex, or religious extremism, determined by the judges, will result in disqualification.
- Entries must not have been previously published in professional media.
- Participants are limited to one submission each.
- All entries are final. No revisions are accepted.
- The decision of the judges are final.
- Winners will be notified by e-mail.
Category 1 and 2
- 1st prize: iPad2
- 2nd prize: $300 worth of book vouchers
- 3rd prize: $200 worth of book vouchers
- 5 budding writing stars: Each will receive $100 worth of book vouchers
