The Prize honours the best work of fiction by a living author, which has been translated into English from any other language and published in the United Kingdom. Uniquely, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize gives the winning author and translator equal status: each receives £5,000.

1. THE PRIZE:
  • The Prize is worth £10,000, to be split in half between the writer and translator who, in the opinion of the judges, have written the best work of fiction that is eligible for the Prize.
  • The Prize may not be withheld or divided between two titles.
2. ELIGIBILITY:
  • Works of fiction published in translation in the United Kingdom (Great Britain and Northern Ireland) between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2012 are eligible for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013.
  • Children's books (such as young adult, teenage and crossover titles) will only be accepted on the condition that they have also been published by an adult imprint within the specified dates.
  • Publishers whose registered offices are outside of the United Kingdom but who distribute books in the United Kingdom are ineligible.
  • Short story collections by a single author as well as full-length works of fiction are eligible for the Prize.
  • Only the first publication of a title in the United Kingdom will be eligible (newly published editions of a title already published in the United Kingdom are ineligible, e.g. a paperback edition of a title previously published in hardback in the United Kingdom).
  • Works that have been self-translated are eligible. In cases where translation is attributed to more than one person (for instance the author and a translator), it is the publisher’s responsibility to advise Booktrust on the division of the prize money.
  • All entries must be submitted by an established UK publishing house (‘established’ is defined as a house that publishes a list of titles by different authors, that produces titles with an ISBN and that distributes them through established retail outlets). Self-published books are not eligible for the Prize.
  • A published work will be eligible regardless of being nominated, shortlisted or winning other prizes or awards.
  • The author must be living at the date of a book’s submission to the Prize.
  • Only one entry per author is permitted, but there is no limit to the number of titles that may be submitted per translator.
  • As the independent administrator of the Prize, Booktrust’s decision upon eligibility will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Publishers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that all submitted titles are eligible for the Prize.
3. ENTRY:
  • There is no entry fee for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013.
  • Entry forms and copies of all works must be received by 5pm on Friday 28 September.2012.
  • Please note that entry forms and books must be must be sent to two separate locations: entry forms are to be sent to iffp@booktrust.org.uk or Lucy Clouting, The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, c/o Booktrust, Book House, 45 East Hill, London SW18 2QZ. Consignments of books are to be sent to: The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, FAO: Kim Singleton, Booktrust Prizes and Awards, EC Group, Europa Park, Magnet Road, Grays, Essex RM20 4DN. Please note that no books can be accepted at Book House by Booktrust. Bound proofs will be accepted before the deadline on condition that finished copies are submitted as soon as they are available.
  • An entry form must be fully completed.
  • Publishers must submit ten copies of each title.
  • A publisher who submits a story on behalf of an author shall be deemed to have obtained the author and translator’s consent and approval of all terms and conditions contained herein.
  • There is no limit to the number of titles that may be entered by a publisher or bona fide imprint, provided the works entered meet all other entry requirements.
  • Copies of submitted works received will not be returned.
  • Booktrust reserves the right to refuse late or incomplete entries.
In entering works to the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013, the publisher agrees:
  • One to supply a further five copies, should a title be longlisted, for administrative and promotional purposes.
  • Two to supply a further 50 copies, should a title be shortlisted, for administrative and promotional purposes.
  • Three to supply a further 15 copies, should a title win, for administrative and promotional purposes.
4 JUDGING:
  • The judging of the Prize will be in three stages: (1) A longlist of approximately 15 titles shall be decided by the judges. (2) Two A shortlist of six titles shall be decided by the judges. (3) Three The winner shall be decided by the judges.
  • In the process of compiling a longlist for the Prize, the judging panel has the right to call in titles they deem to be noteworthy for consideration. In this instance, publishers will be required to submit an entry form and the nine copies as soon as possible.
  • The decision of the judges for the longlist, shortlist and the winner will be final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
5. PROMOTION OF THE PRIZE:

In entering works to the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013, the publisher agrees to work in collaboration with Booktrust to undertake a mutually acceptable limited programme of activities to promote the award which shall include, but not be limited to:
  • Supplying biographical and bibliographical information, including but not limited to text extracts of up to 200 words, jacket images author and translator photographs and biographies, AIs, inside spreads and any additional material (trailers, audio extracts, etc) requested that will help to promote the Prize.
  • Using best endeavours to facilitate recorded interviews and other public activities with authors and translators, to be used by Booktrust on the internet or media platforms to promote the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize 2013.
  • Inviting the shortlisted author and translator to the award ceremony, to cover their expenses and using best endeavours to ensure their attendance.
