Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Culture in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, from August 1, 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal. Appointee with demonstrated performance will be considered for tenure towards the end of the second three-year contract. Information about the School can be obtained at http://www0.hku.hk/smlc/.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in hand by the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be a specialist in modern Japanese literature, with familiarity with pre-modern literature. Candidate should also possess native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English, with teaching experience and research interests in transnational connections, and explore such areas as film studies, popular culture, or other visual and performing arts across cultures or disciplines. Responsibilities include teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, mentoring students and contributing to building the curriculum. The candidate must exhibit promise of leadership and vision, possess an excellent research agenda, and have an energetic and engaging personality for propelling the program to the next level of excellence. The appointee is required to teach at least three courses annually. There is substantial competitive funding for research projects of all kinds as provided by the School and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council.
A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
