Media Academy-Iraq is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the third Open Eye Award (2012), to encourage distinguished journalistic endeavors in Iraq.
This year’s awards will be given to Iraqi journalists who have distinguished themselves the following areas:
THE AWARD-CATEGORIES:
Articles eligible for the competition are those that address the main challenges facing Iraq as a democratic nation. This includes articles that cover topics such as economic reforms, business and economics, human rights, social and cultural topics. Articles about inspirational projects and innovative start-ups (ie: alternative energies and the environment, e-commerce, youth projects) are particularly encouraged. All forms of journalism (features, analytical articles, profiles, etc.) will be accepted.
The prize for the best media entrepreneur will go to a person who has recently implemented an innovative media project or program (print, online, TV, radio) or to a media company that has financed a project in an especially innovative and sustainable way. The project or company should enrich the media landscape in Iraq, strengthen press freedoms, characterize high quality coverage and act as a trendsetter for other media. The prize will be awarded in cooperation with PLURAL Media Services.

THE JUDGES: The judging panel will be composed of Iraqi and German journalists, editors and editors-in-chief.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The “best business journalist” award will be awarded by the German-Iraqi business website, WP-Irak.de and Germany’s MICT, in co-operation with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The other two awards will be sponsored by the Media Academy-Iraq.
The German-Iraqi business website, WP-Irak.de, was established in 2009 to give German businesses information on major economic, political and social aspects in Iraq. The website’s aim is to develop positive economic opportunities between the two nations and to contribute towards stability and democracy in Iraq.
Media Academy-Iraq was established by Media in Co-operation and Transition (MICT) with the support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Media in Cooperation and Transition (MICT) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization with offices in Berlin. Its activities include media training for journalists and other content producers, the development of media-relevant programs and the production of radio programs, films and books. It also monitors media in places of conflict.

- Best photojournalism
- Best media entrepreneurship

BEST BUSINESS JOURNALISM, EITHER ONLINE OR PRINTED:
- Open to any Iraqi journalist, 18 years of age or older
- Texts accepted in both Arabic and Kurdish
- Articles must have been published after October 1, 2011
- The article should not exceed 5 pages (A4, font size: 12, space: 1.5)
- The journalist should fill in the application form. To fill in the form click here
- The journalist should send the application form together with the article before the deadline on August 31, 2012, to the following address:mirvat@mict-international.org
- No specified topic
- Both colour and/or black and white pictures are accepted
- Photographs should be in JPG format only
- Each participant should send a portfolio containing a minimum of 4 and 10 max photographs
BEST MEDIA ENTREPRENEUR :
- Potential prize winners may not apply themselves, they must be suggested by someone else Suggestions must state the reasons why and for which project the person is being suggested
- Suggestions and reasons for nomination should not exceed one page (A4, font size: 12, space: 1.5)
