Muse India (www.museindia.com) is the leading literary web journal of the country that showcases Indian Writings in English, and regional literatures of India in translation, to a global audience. The journal is widely respected for its thematic coverage and distinguished panel of Contributing Editors from all over India. Established in 2005 by a group of writers, it has a membership base of 5500 from over 40 countries and attracts around 10000 visits to its site every month.
In 2011 Muse India instituted National Literary Awards in the following two categories to be given annually at the Hyderabad Literary Festival –
a. Muse India Young Writer Award to be given to a writer below 35 years of age for an outstanding original work in English or in English translation from any Indian language.
b. Muse India Translation Award to be given to a work of translation into English from any Indian language. Translation should be of a classic or any significant contemporary literary work, preferably not translated earlier, and seen as an important new contribution to Indian Literature.
The awards for 2011 were given on Jan 16, 2012 at Hyderabad Literary Festival 2012 through the hands of Mr. Adil Jussawala, the eminent poet. While Mr Ranjit Hoskote won the Translation Award, Ms Anindita Sengupta walked away with the Young Writer Award.
SUBMISSIONS INVITED FOR MUSE INDIA AWARDS 2012
Submissions are now invited from authors and publishers for consideration of both categories of Muse India National Literary Awards 2012 to be given away at HLF 2013 in January 2013.
a. Young Writer Award will carry a memento and cash prize Rs.20,000.
If the Award goes to a translated work, the original writer (35 years or younger) will get Rs 15,000 and the translator Rs 5000.
The focus here will be to recognize originality and merit in a young writer’s work.
b. Translation Award will carry a memento and cash prize of Rs 30,000.
Of this, Rs 20,000 will be given to the translator and Rs 10,000 to the original writer, if alive. Else, the entire amount goes to the translator.
This award will recognize not only the merit of translation but also the effort involved in bringing to a wider audience, a classic or an outstanding work of a regional language, which otherwise may have remained largely unknown.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
A. Young Writer Award
i. Writer should be a Resident or Non-Resident Indian citizen.
ii. Writer (or original writer in case of translated work) should be 35 years of age or younger as on the date of publication.
iii. Books published in English, or translated into English from any Indian language, only will be eligible but not original works in regional languages.
iv. Works of any creative literary genre (poetry, short fiction, long fiction, plays etc) may be submitted for consideration of the award.
v. Books published on or after Jan 1, 2011 by established publishers will be eligible.
vi. E-Books published by reputed publishers will also be eligible. However, printed copies of the book along with complete details of the Publisher and their website have to be submitted.
vii. Self published books or self published E-books will not be eligible.
viii. 3 copies of the book have to be submitted along with proof of age of the author by way of copy of date of birth certificate, or passport, or driving license or any other valid photo-identity card. Author bio-note and photo should be submitted in case not available in the book.
ix. Last date for submission – July 31, 2012.
Entries received after this date will not be considered.
B. Translation Award
i. This Award is open to Indians as well as citizens of other countries working on Indian literatures.
ii. There is no age limit for this award.
iii. Books translated from any Indian language into English only will be eligible.
iv. Works of any creative literary genre (poetry, short fiction, long fiction, plays etc) may be submitted for consideration of the award.
v. Books published on or after Jan 1, 2011 by established publishers will be eligible.
vi. Self published books or E-books will not be eligible for this award.
vii. 3 copies of the book along with all relevant details of publication and a synopsis should be submitted. Author and Translator bio-notes and photos should also be submitted in case these are not included in the book.
viii. Last date for submission – July 31, 2012.
ix. Entries received after this date will not be considered.
JURY: A distinguished panel of judges comprising authors, scholars and critics will assess the entries and select the award winners.
