Makassar International Writers Festival (MIWF) is the first and only international literary festival in Eastern Indonesia, which aims to promote the city of Makassar, in South Sulawesi Provinceas an important hub in arts, culture and literature in Asia and the World. It was established in June 2011. The festival aims to promote writers’ exchange and to expand networks as well as to celebrate the achievements in literature with the local communities of Makassar.

MIWF is organized by Rumata’ Artspace, the first independent cultural hub which facilitates various cultural programs in the city of Makassar. It promotes cooperation between local artists with other arts/cultural communities/organizations in the World. MIWF is designed as a-5 day festival with six main activities: readings, writers exchange program, community events, talks, workshops and book launch. This year’s theme is Visiting the Memories which explores the intersections of literature, history and the city architecture.MIWF is promoting further understanding and cooperation among writers.

MIWF committee members have been working to set up the festival program since last year. A curatorial board selects writers from overseas and nominates 5 emerging writers from Eastern Indonesia to receive the Rumata’ Literary Fellowships. The committee also invites established writers from across Indonesia to participate in talks, readings, workshops, community programs and writers tour. The committee has approached the participating writers from Australia, Hong Kong, England, Singapore, Malaysia, US and sending proposals to the writers’ affiliated institutions to sponsor the participating writers.

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

WEDNESDAY 13 JUNE 2012

09.00 – 12.00/ Literature in the Air: All participating writers attend live literature reading and talk in one of five radio stations in Makassar

18.30 – 22.00 Opening Ceremony: The City of Makassar presents a gala dinner for all participating writers, short movie screening, reading session featuring Indonesian and international writers

THURSDAY 14 JUNE 2012

09.00 – 16.00 Breakout panel/discussion/talk/cultural trip: Participating writers join discussions and talks during at the festival centre followed by a cultural trip hosted by the City of Makassar

19.00 – 22.00 Community Event/ Makassar Timeline: An open-mic session, reading, poetry slam and celebration of literature and music with local communities, with an interactive live-report on twitter to spread the joy of MIWF 2012 through Social Media

FRIDAY 15 JUNE 2012

09.00 – 16.00 “Visiting the Memories, Reading for the Past”: Writers are divided into a small group to visit historical buildings inMakassar. Please bring your works for reading and discussion sessions as the heritage sites. A scholar will open the session with a small talk on the history of Makassar and its relationships with other places in the World

19.00 – 22.00 Community Event/ Makassar Timeline: An open-mic session, reading, poetry slam and celebration of literature and music with local communities, with an interactive live-report on Twitter to spread the joy of MIWF 2012 through Social Media

SATURDAY 16 JUNE 2012

09.00 – 16.00 Writers Exchange Program – One day trip to Makassar Spermonde Islands: Meet the local community and share the joy of literature with the islanders!

19.00 – 22.00 Community Event/ Makassar Timeline: An open-mic session, reading, poetry slam and celebration of literature and music with local communities, with an interactive live-report on Twitter to spread the joy of MIWF 2012 through Social Media
