Call for Submissions for a Volume of Essays: A New History of Modern Japanese Art
Deadline: 25 June 2012

The Enzo Press is seeking to compile a volume of new research essays on Japanese art history spanning from the Meiji period to the present. It is hoped that this volume will become a much-needed standard text on modern Japanese art history. We are seeking to examine Japanese modernism in a continuous trajectory, from the earliest Western-orientated experiments, through the emergence of the avant-garde, to contemporary art production.

Contributions for this ambitious new project are now being sought. We are interested in papers treating:
  • Meiji modernisation
  • The Imperial Academy
  • The influence of Impressionism and Western art in Japan
  • The experiments of Shirakaba, the Shinkankakuha, and other late nineteenth and early twentieth century practitioners
  • The emergence of an avant-garde in Japan, including Dada, Constructivism, Abstractionism and others
  • Wartime art production and censorship
  • Art during the Occupation
  • The 1960s avant-garde and new sponsors and exhibitions fora
  • The Tokyo Olympics, the Osaka Expo70, and associated artistic production
  • Commericalisation of art during the 70s, 80s, and 90s
  • Contemporary art production and globalisation and any other topic or movement falling within this period.

We are looking for papers that interrogate existing scholarship, create revisionist histories, and that consider the work of more than one practitioner, or a group or movement, placing these works in their historical and socio-political contexts. We will not consider papers that deal with the work of a single artist or theorist in isolation.

Please send papers of between 5,000 to 10,000 words, together with an abstract, bibliography, and illustrations list, to commissioning@enzoarts.com, with New Japan as the subject, by the deadline of June 25th.
