AVID workshops are open to all and feature leading lights in the above mentioned fields from India and abroad. These workshops are highly interactive with a fun mix of lecture-demonstrations, audio-visual presentations and practical sessions, concluding in an event that summarizes the essence of the AVID Experience.
TRAVEL WRITING WORKSHOP WITH DILIP D’SOUZA
Dilip D’Souza ,writer & journalist, takes you through a 2-day workshop on travel writing. Learn to translate your travel experiences into words to preserve and share, a voyage of insatiable discovery. Qualifying participants stand a chance to get published in the new TimeOut Explorer.

AVID FACULTY
Dilip D'Souza is a writer, journalist and occasional activist. He writes on social and political issues, travel and current affairs, and also writes a well-known mathematics column for Mint. Dilip has written three books ("Branded by Law", "The Narmada Dammed", "Roadrunner") and has essays in a number of anthologies. Some of his longer essays include "House in a Slum? You Can't Afford It" (Washington Post, on housing concerns in Mumbai), "Major Habib Ahmed's Journey From Pakistan to India" (Forbes India, about a Pakistani major's return to India after 62 years), "A Few Good Doctors" (Fountain Ink magazine, on rural health in Chhattisgarh) and "Get to the Top" (Caravan magazine, on the coaching class phenomenon in Kota, Rajasthan). He has won several prestigious awards for his writing, including the Statesman Rural Reporting Award, the Times of India/Red Cross prize, the TimeOut Travel Writing Award, the Sanctuary Magazine prize and the Outlook/Picador nonfiction prize for his essay "Ride Across The River" (about an Army officer killed in action in Kashmir, examining patriotism through his example). His article about two young engineers was one of the inspirations for the movie Swades. He has written for most major publications in India and several abroad.
Dilip has a BE in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (BITS Pilani) and a MS in Computer Science from Brown University in the USA. He studied and worked as a software engineer in United States from 1981 to 1992 when he returned to India to write full time.

DAY 1, SATURDAY, 10:00AM TO 5.30PM
Session 1, 10am-1pm : Travel as a creative process
- Why travel is as creative a process as writing
- Why do you choose a destination? What about it interests you? What about travel interests you?
- No substitute for actually writing: which is why you will do at least four short writing exercises in this workshop.
- With no further preamble: a Writing Exercise: write 10 lines about a recent journey. Make me want to go there.
- Discuss a reading (will be provided).
Session 2, 2:30pm-5:30pm: The “Lead”
- How do you start writing a travel article?
- Why a strong start (the lead) is essential if you want to hold your reader.
- Writing Exercise #2: Write a lead (3-4 lines, 100 words).
- Read it out and discuss: why did you choose it? What makes it interesting? Why is it interesting to your reader?
- Discuss one or more readings (leads) – will be provided.
DAY 2, SUNDAY, 10:00AM TO 5.30PM
Session 3, 10am-1pm: Open your eyes to detail
- Fundamental thing about travel: keep your eyes open.
- Keep notes. Always.
- The magic is in the details. For your reader, but as a challenge for you as a writer.
- Take a short walk (10-15 minutes) through the building, noting down anything of interest. No detail is not worth noting. Don’t share with the others yet.
- Writing Exercise #3: Write 100 words that use some of that detail, that tell us why you noted it.
- Discuss a reading (will be provided)
Session 4, 2:30pm-5:30pm- The anecdote
- Writing is, in the end, about telling a story.
- What makes a good story? Anecdotes.
- Writing Exercise #4: Write an anecdote from recent travel, 100 words.
- Discuss some published anecdotes: setting a mood, lending a flavour to your writing.
- Discuss a reading (will be provided).
