Deadline May 18 | No Entry Fee: $2500 Yiddish Translation Prize 2012
Deadline: 18 May 2012

The Yiddish Book Center is accepting submissions for its 2012 Yiddish Translation Prize. The $2,500 award will go to an outstanding new translation of Yiddish prose literature, fiction or non-fiction, which has been completed or published within the past two years.

The Yiddish Translation Prize is one of a number of recently launched initiatives designed to mobilize a new generation of Yiddish translators. "So far, less than two percent of Yiddish literature has been translated into English," says Aaron Lansky, founder and president of the Yiddish Book Center. "We've been publishing new translations for the past ten years through Yale University Press, but most of our translators are elderly, and at our present rate of a book a year, it will be anouther 39,000 years before the project is complete. So we're doing all we can to encourage a new generation."

Submissions, which are due by May 18, 2012, will be judged by Lawrence Rosenwald (Wellesley College), Anita Norich (University of Michigan), and Amanda Miryem-Khaye Siegel (New York Public Library). The prizewinner will be announced in the fall of 2012.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

Submissions must include three hard copies of the work, a copy of the Yiddish original or a link to the electronic file of the Yiddish original, and contact information.

Submissions must be received by Friday, May 18, 2012, and may be mailed to S. Israel, Yiddish Book Center, 1021 West Street, Amherst, MA 01002.
