The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre and The Star (Sarawak Edition) is organising a Biodiversity Essay Writing Contest for lower secondary school students aged 13 to 15 years (Form 1 to 3) throughout Sarawak. Contestants may pick from one of the following topics.

·How much life is there in the sea?

·Our biodiversity, our heritage

·Why should we protect our biodiversity?

Entries must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words and must be original work in English.

Plagiarism, which includes the use of third-party poetry, song lyrics, characters or another person’s ideas without written permission or proper acknowledgment will result in disqualification.

Entries must not have been previously published anywhere or in the media, and they must be submitted in electronic format (email) to biosar@sbc.org.my

The subject of the email must read “BIODIVERSITY ESSAY COMPETITION”

All entries must be double spaced, with numbered pages (bottom left corner of each page) in either Microsoft Word or Open Office formats.

Each entry must have a cover page with the title of the work, the contestant’s name, school name and address, full mailing address, telephone number and email address. Each contestant may submit only one essay.

The deadline for entry is April 27, and the results will be announced ahead of the prize-giving, May 25, at Sarawak Biodiversity Centre’s Biodiversity Day.

Attractive prizes are up for grabs, and all entrants will also receive certificates of participation.

World Biodiversity Day is celebrated around the world on May 22 every year. This year, the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre will hold several activities for school students and adults on May 25 at its premises at KM20, Jalan Borneo Heights, Semengoh. These activities include a colouring contest, pottery painting contest and public awareness talks.
