2012 Donghwa: East Meets West International Essay Competition

Donghwa Cultural Foundation has been promoting Eastern Asian cultures, arts, and philosophy through various forms of education programs. The mission and values of Donghwa is not only to exchange Eastern and Western cultures, but also to promote deeper understandings of Eastern philosophy such as “harmony” and “peace” that will hopefully illuminate throughout the global community.

In the context of globalization and advancement of technology, we live in a world deeply connected to each other. This is why Donghwa believes it is important to raise consciousness of cross-cultural competence, similarities and differences among us as global citizens. This year, Donghwa will host its third "East Meets West International Essay Competition" in May to listen to various voices of young generation from all over the world. “2012 Donghwa: East Meets West International Essay Competition ” will also provide invaluable opportunities to understand ongoing cultural transformations and its impacts on each other.

GUIDELINES

Topics (Select one)

1. Discuss your interest in traditional and modern Asian culture, and explore:

a) How such knowledge has impacted your cultural awareness of other countries.

b) How such knowledge has impacted your cultural awareness of living and residing in America

2. Discuss the effect of "Eastern Culture on Western Culture" and explore:

a) How each culture has engaged each other, and the resulting transformations and impacts on specific countries, people, on issues such as law, economics, trade, in the 20th and/or 21st Centuries.

b) How each culture has engaged each other in the context of globalization, and its impact on popular culture topics like the media, music, movie/TV, and technology in the 20th and/or 21st Centuries.

3. Discuss your Asian/Asian American, or Korean/Korean American cultural identity and explore:

a) How such knowledge has affected your appreciation of Eastern and/or Western cultures.

b) How such knowledge has affected your cross-cultural experience and perspective.

c) How such knowledge has affected your community involvement.

DIVISION
  • High School Division: 9th-12th grade
  • College Division: All college students

QUALIFICATIONS
  • All high school and college undergraduate students
  • Award recipients will be requested to submit proof of their school enrollment.

ESSAY REQUIREMENTS

1. Essay must be written in English, double-spaced in 12 font Times New Roman, and one-inch margins on all sides.

2. Essay should have a minimum of 800 to a maximum of 1000 words for high school students and a minimum of 1200 to a maximum of 1500 words for college undergraduate students.

3. Include a cover page with your name and the topic you chose.

4. Write your name only on the cover page.

5. Send the application form and essay by email only.

ENTRY DEADLINE

All submissions must be emailed by 5 pm (Eastern Time) on June 25th, 2012 (previously May 25th, 2012) to essay@donghwaculture.org.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS

The list of winners will be posted on the Donghwa Cultural Foundation website.

Award Ceremony at Donghwa: Date is to be announced.

One Grand Prize: One round trip air ticket to Korea

High School Division:
  • One Gold Prize: $300 scholarship
  • One Silver Prize: $200 scholarship
  • One Bronze Prize: $100 scholarship

College Division:
  • One Gold Prize: $500 scholarship
  • One Silver Prize: $300 scholarship
  • One Bronze Prize: $100 scholarship

Special Awards: Consulate General Award, The Korea Daily Award, University of Pittsburgh Award

All entries will become the property of Donghwa Cultural Foundation. The winning entries may be displayed and published by the Donghwa Cultural Foundation and the local media.
