The Singapore Literature Prize (SLP) is a prestigious writing award that carries a cash prize of up to S$10,000. It is awarded to outstanding published works of fiction in each of the four official languages – English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
This biennial competition is open to Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents and is awarded for published works of fiction (short stories and novels) and poetry published between January 2010 and December 2011.
The Singapore Literature Prize is organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) with the support of the National Arts Council.
THIS BIENNIAL COMPETITION AIMS TO ACHIEVE TWO OBJECTIVES:
1 RULES AND REGULATIONS
1.1 Eligibility
(a) The competition is open to all Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents of Singapore who are at least 18 years of age (at the time of entry).
1.2 Category
(a) The competition will be held for any published work of fiction, i.e. short stories, novels and poetry published in Singapore or abroad between January 2010 and December 2011.
(b) The submitted literary work should not only be published during the two years, but that a significant percentage of the content should be published for the first time.
1.3 Subject and Theme
Entries may be on any subject or theme.
1.4 Language
Works submitted in each category must be written in one of the four official languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil.
1.5 Originality
(a) Each entry must be an original work written by the entrant.
(b) The entrant must be the sole author of the work.
(c) Only published works will be accepted. To be eligible, works must be published in printed form for general commercial release.
1.6 Length
(a) Short Stories
Each entry should have a minimum of six stories with a total minimum length of 30,000 words.
(b) Novels
Each entry should have a minimum length of 30,000 words.
(c) Poetry
Each entry, in the opinion of judges, should be a substantial piece of work.
1.7 Number of Entries
(a) An entrant may submit more than one entry for the competition for a particular year provided that the works are different and not variations of the same work.
(b) The same entry should not be submitted in more than one language.
(c) An official entry form must be attached to each submitted entry. The entrant must provide four (4) copies for each entry.
(d) Entries can be submitted either by the author or publisher.
1.8 Selection
(a) There will be a panel of at least three judges for each language.
(b) The decision of the judges is final and binding. No correspondence in relation to the judges’ decision will be entertained.
(c) The Organising Committee reserves the right to not award a prize should the entries fail, in the judges’ opinion, to meet the required standard.
(d) The writers, who have won twice consecutively, will not be eligible to participate in the current SLP 2012 award.
1.9 Closing Date
The closing date for the competition is 7 May 2012, 5.00 pm.
1.10 Book Submitted
(a) The organisers shall not be held responsible for any book that has been lost or damaged in transit.
(b) Books submitted for the SLP award will be retained by the Book Council.
2 THE SINGAPORE LITERATURE PRIZE AWARD
2.1 The Award
(a) The Singapore Literature Prize carries an award of $10,000 for the winner in each of the languages. In addition, the winner shall be presented with a specially commissioned plaque.
(b) The judges shall only award one Singapore Literature Prize per language for the competition. If in any one year, none of the works submitted merit the Singapore Literature Prize, the judges shall not declare any winner.
(c) In the event that there is no winner for the Singapore Literature Prize, the judges may give Merit Prizes of $5,000 each or Commendation Prizes of $1,000 each instead. The total Prize money in each language category will not amount to more than $10,000.
2.2 Shortlist
The Organising Committee will announce a shortlist of works considered for the Singapore Literature Prize in September 2012.
2.3 Announcement of Winners
The Prize will be awarded to all winners at an award ceremony in November 2012. Winners will be notified nearer to the date of the ceremony and attendance is compulsory.
2.4 Responsibility
Prize winners are obliged to conduct workshops and engage in mentorship programmes to help budding writers.
3 THE SLP COMMITTEE
The members of the SLP Organising Committee are appointed by the Book Council. The SLP Organising Committee shall administer the competition, including the appointment of judges.
4 SUBMISSION
All entries (each entry must have 4 copies) should be submitted through registered post or delivered by hand, in a parcel marked “The Singapore Literature Prize 2012” and addressed to:

The submission should also include a short biographical data (not more than 50 words) and a photograph of the author.

In case of ambiguity over the translation of the rules and regulations, the English version shall prevail.
