Call for Book Reviewers: HYPHEN Magazine (Asian American culture and politics magazine)
Deadline:

Love books? Have strong opinions? Excited to share your thoughts?

Hyphen’s books editors, Cathlin and Abigail, are looking for writers to review newly released books of all genres for the Hyphen blog. Reviews are 600-900 words. They must be thoughtful and well-written, and can be either personal or academic in style. We do not limit coverage to works by Asian American authors. We also encourage reviews of any book from an Asian American perspective, or of books which merit strong interest from the Asian American community. We provide a monthly list of available review copies from which reviewers can select.

Book reviewers will also have the chance to pitch articles and author interviews for both the blog and print issues.

Examples of past reviews include:

Julie Otsuka's The Buddha in the Attic by Manan Desai (fiction)

GB Tran's Vietnamerica by Nawaaz Ahmed (graphic novel)

Anne Elizabeth Moore's Cambodian Grrrl by Marites L. Mendoza (nonfiction)

Cathlin’s essays and stories have appeared in Hyphen, I Saw My Ex at a Party (Kearny Street Press), Teacher Revised, and ASCD Express. She has performed her work at Kearny Street Workshop’s Apature Festival and San Francisco’s Litquake. A former high school English teacher, she is currently a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Abigail’s poetry and book reviews have appeared in Calyx, The Critical Flame, and the San Francisco Chronicle, among others. She received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her master’s degree in literature from Oxford University.

If interested, please email Cathlin (cathlin.goulding[at]hyphenmagazine[dot]com) and Abigail (abigail.licad[at]hyphenmagazine[dot]com), and provide two writing samples. If you’ve got ideas for possible articles and author interviews, feel free to share.
