A Word in Transit: Panel Discussion with Eric Tinsay Valles, Alving Pang and David Fedo (Kinokuniya Orchard, Singapore)
Date: 13 August 2011

Migrants are a hot-button issue in this nation of migrants. They were the subject of recent General Election speeches that fed the fear that migrants pose a threat to livelihoods and social cohesion in the grassroots. Certain government officials typically defended the importation of foreign talent as necessary. “Even the US needs to top up with talent,” recently retired Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said. “Singapore must do so or lose out.”

What positive contributions are migrants making to their adopted society? How vulnerable are they, particularly women, to xenophobia? Find out more and listen to views on migration and the creative rendering of the migrant experience in a panel discussion based on the book A World In Transit with academic/poet Eric Tinsay Valles, poet, writer and editor Alvin Pang and academic/poet David Fedo, the Executive Director of and Visiting Scholar at the Singapore branch of the Wheelock College (Boston, Massachusetts) Center for International Education, Leadership, and Innovation, at Kinokuniya Singapore Main Store on Saturday, 13th August at 2.00 p.m.
