WPYW National Day Writing Competition 2011: WHAT DOES BEING A SINGAPOREAN MEAN TO ME?

Cash and prizes worth $1,200 in total are up for grabs in the WPYW National Day Writing Competition 2011!

In conjunction with the National Day celebrations, the competition aims to promote creative writing and enhance the sense of being a Singaporean amongst our youths.

The competition consists of an Essay category and a Poetry category. You can take part in one or both categories.

From 18 July to 10 August 2011, simply submit an essay/poem that you think best examplifies the topic “What Does Being a Singaporean Mean to Me?”

This competition is open to all Singaporeans aged between 13 and 30 years. Winners will be determined by a panel of esteemed judges and number of “Likes” on the WPYW Facebook.

1. Topic

What Does Being A Singaporean Mean To Me?

2. Categories

2.1. This competition has two categories: (a) Essay, and (b) Poetry.

2.2. You may participate in one or both of the categories.

3. Eligibility

3.1. Singapore Citizens aged 13 to 30 years at the time of participation.

3.2. Members of the Organising Committee, WP Youth Wing Executive Committee, WP Central Executive Council, Competition Judges, and their immediate family members are ineligible to participate.

4. Guidelines on Essay & Poem

4.1. Your essay/poem must be written in English.

4.2. Your essay/poem must be submitted via the form provided in the WPYW website.

4.3. The word limit for an essay is 500 words. The word limit for a poem is 150 words. If an essay/poem exceeds the word limit, only the first 500 words (for essays) or the first 150 words (for poems) may be considered in the scoring.

4.4. Only your first submitted essay/poem will be accepted.

4.5. Organisers reserve the right to decide whether to post your submitted essay or poem to the WPYW Facebook page, in cases where the organisers deem the essays/poems are not suitable for posting.

5. Scoring

5.1. Judges’ Scores shall make up 60% of the total score of an essay/poem.

5.2. The number of Facebook ‘Likes’ shall make up 40% of the total score of an essay/poem.

6. How to Participate

6.1. Submit your completed essay/poem via http://wpyouth.sg/ nationalday2011 from 18 July 2011 to 10 August 2011.

6.2. The organisers shall post your submitted essay/poem to the Workers’ Party Youth Wing (WPYW) Facebook Page.

6.3. Encourage your friends to ‘like’ the WPYW Facebook Page. Only those who ‘like’ the page can ‘like’ your essay/poem.

6.4. Number of ‘likes’ for each essay/poem will be recorded on 23 August 2011, 0000hrs.

7. Prizes (for each category)
  • 1st Prize: $200 cash
  • 2nd Prize: $150 cash
  • 3rd Prize: $100 cash
  • 5 Merit Prizes: $30 Kinokuniya Vouchers

8. Collection of Prizes

8.1. Results will be announced in the WPYW Facebook Page and the WPYW website on 24 August 2011

8.2. Prize presentation session will be held on 27 August 2011, 2.30pm at WP HQ, 216-G Syed Alwi Road, #02-03.

8.3. All prize-winners and participants are invited to attend the prize presentation session.
