Call for Submissions - Readings From Readings: New Malaysian Writing 2
Deadline: 31 December 2011

Following the success of Readings From Readings : New Malaysian Writing our first collection of writings based on the events we organise (Readings@Seksan and CeritAku) Bernice Chauly and Sharon Bakar are planning a second volume to be launched mid-2012. We are looking for writing that is fresh and exciting, perhaps even a little edgy.

This time we are happy to accept submissions both from those who have read at the event in the past, and those who are prepared to read their work live at Readings@Seksan in the coming months. This is to open an avenue to fresh talent and to find new writers who may currently be below our radar.

We would want the book(s) to reflect the nature of the event so all kinds of texts including flash fiction, short stories, creative non-fiction, poetry, blog posts, and short plays are welcome. Extracts from longer works will be considered, as long as they can stand alone.

This time we have decided to extend the upward limit of prose pieces to 3,500 words.

You may submit no more than 2 pieces of prose writing (fiction or non-fiction), and/or up to 5 pieces of poetry, in either Malay or English (or a rojak of both languages).

We are happy to publish previously published work provided that 1) it has not appeared in a locally published book that was easily available here 2) you own the copyright to the piece (you may be required to submit evidence of this).

Each piece will be chosen for its merit i.e. just because you have read at an event, it does not mean that your work will automatically be included – we have to put together a commercially viable publication of the best material.

We will work with you on editing pieces where we feel some revision is necessary.

Those whose work is selected will be expected to help promote the book at events after publication including at the launch and at bookstore events around KL.

I’m sorry we can’t pay you for your efforts, beyond giving you three free copies of the book and allowing you to purchase extra copies at a generous discount. But you will continue to hold copyright of all work submitted, and if we do turn a profit, it will go towards further publications and projects.

How to submit: Send your work as a Word attachment with the words READINGS FROM READINGS SUBMISSIONS in the subject line to sharonbakar@yahoo.com Please double space your work, and use a font that is easy on the eyes (eg. Times New Roman 12 point). Your name, phone number and email address should be on the cover page.
